In the 1970's the Herberger's space
was occupied by Van Arsdell's. Those of you who remember
the store may remember that there was a lower level.
This basement of Van Arsdell's was where the Boy Scouts of America sold
their official merchandise.
My brother and I were both Cub Scouts, so we frequented the lower level
of Van Arsdells for all of our scouting needs.

In September, 2003 I inquired about the basement of Van Arsdell's, and was informed that the
staircase was still intact; it was simply sealed up when
Herberger's moved in. The management at Herberger's was gracious
enough to allow me to take these photos:
